Resources

  • Astray Scans
    • A retro Japanese media package archive. Lots of scans from games and movies.
  • BitFontMaker2
    • Free tool for creating pixel fonts. I haven't made my own, but I have used some of the fonts others have made available in the public archive.
  • Calligraphr
    • Another tool for creating your own fonts. I used this one to make a font for my Quiz Results page out of my own handwriting. A subscription is required to get the full use out of this software.
  • Catbox
    • Website for hosting files. I use this mainly for audio and larger PDFs.
  • Dithermark
    • The main online software I use to dither (reduce an image's color and size) all of my graphics. If you like my website's pixelated look, it's all thanks to this. If Dithermark is down, there's also Dither it!
  • GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program
    • My tool of choice for editing and creating graphics, and one I've used since middle school. Most of what you see on Two-Reeler.com has passed through GIMP at some point.
  • Online Fonts
    • Online fonts resource. Whenever I need a font, I usually start here.
  • Public Domain Image Archive
    • Excellent trove of public domain images sourced mainly from old books.
  • sakugabooru
    • Archive of sakuga (exceptional animation) videos and gifs
  • The Spriters Resource
    • THE resource for video game sprites. I've been using this website for nearly 20 years. For video game models, see their offshoot, The Models Resource
  • Two-Reeler - Free Resources
    • My free resources page. It's where I dump cursors, animataions, bgs, stamps, and misc. effects I've prepared in GIMP. Some have been used on the site, others were made just for other people to use. All are welcome to be used without the need to credit me. I'm not really much of an artist anyhow. Everthing I make relies on photographs or the work of others, such as many of the animations I've cut out and turned into gifs. I personally believe that works of art should be able to be admired and iterated on by all. Copy right is a necessary evil under capitalism, but capitalism is an evil and should be done away with.

Podcasts

  • Politics, Activism, and Current Events
    • Podcasts, generally from a leftist (progressive, anarchist, socialist, communist—I'm not picky) perspective, covering our ongoing fall into fascism and what can be done about it.
      • The Audit - Excellent podcast covering the far-right propaganda pushers at PragerU.
      • Downstream - Interview podcast from independent left-wing outlet, Novara Media.
      • Democracy Now - Objective, high quality journalism that covers world news without manufacturing consent for the empire. If you only consume one news sources, this is the one.
      • The Deprogram - Far-left podcast where three dudes discuss US politics, current events, and the ongoing fall of the United States.
      • Dystopia Now - Two hosts and the occasional expert guest discuss the existential risks being forced upon us by Silicon Valley ghouls. Great theme song :D
      • Factually! with Adam Conover - Interview show from a center-left persepctive. Covers current events, US politics, technology, and activism. Good sense of humor.
      • The Intercept - Politics and investigative journalism from The Intercept. There are multiple podcasts here, all well worth your time.
      • It Could Happen Here -The first season explores how a modern US Civil War might play out. Subsequent and ongoing seasons cover current events and activism. The cast provides plenty of edgy humor for levity. Their weekly "Executive Disorder" series serves as a good summary of the week's news as the Trump admin turns everything to shit.
      • Live Like the World is Dying - Anarchist/queer podcast covering current events and promoting resilience in the face of our ongoing fascist coup.
      • The Majority Report - Daily progressive talk podcast covering American politics as they happen.
      • Rev Left Radio - Marxist podcast focusing on interviews and indepth discussions of theory.
      • Tech Won't Save Us - Similar show to Dystopia Now, but just one host interviews experts and journalists regarding the risks Silicon Valley poses to us all.
      • Useful Idiots - US politics and current events from a far-left perspective. Not disimilar to others linked here. Good camaraderie between hosts.
      • The War on Cars - Anticar, pro people podcast that dicusses ways cities and communties can improve accessibility for all.
  • Polycrisis
    • Podcasts focused on the polycrisis (climate change, resource scarcity, plastic pollution, biodiversity loss, pandemics, civilizational collapse, etc.).
      • Drilled - A true crime climate podcast focusing on the criminals leading humanity's demise.
      • Crazy Town - A climate change podast that tells it like it is, but with a little bit of edgy humor to lessen the blow.
      • Death Panel - COVID cautious podcast on public health from a far-left lense. I especially recommend their episode, "How Liberals Killed Masking."
      • The Great Simplification - Show that consists primarily of interviews with experts working in various fields attempting to understand and address the polycrisis as our society moves ever closer to the edge of a very precipitous cliff.
      • Osterholm Update - Infectious disease podcast from CIDRAP (the University of Minnesota's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy). Its been a great source of info during this pandemic, especially after the collective amnesia hit and most people began to ignore the deadly virus killing and disabling millions of us each year.
      • Planet: Critical - Similar to The Great Simplification, but from a more explicitly leftist perspective.
      • Breaking Down: Collapse - An introduction to the the concept of civilizational collapse. The hosts describe their journey into collapse awareness. Ongoing episodes cover current events as we spiral ever further down the drain.
  • History and Narrative
    • History and narrative podcasts, often told though a leftist lense.
      • Behind the Bastards - Same people as It Could Happen Here. Episodic series exploring the worst humans to ever live. Some real evil mfers. Same edgy humor.
      • Blowback - A podcast exposing the many evils of the American Empire. Season one covers the Iraq War. Later seasons cover other events where America played the bad guy, including the Cuban Revolution, Korean War, Afganistan, and America's involvement in Indochina and Angola. High production values on this one.
      • In Our Time - Educational podcast from the BBC. Each episode brings together various academics to a cover topics from Shakespeare's Macbeth to the evolution of humanity.
      • You Must Remember This - Stellar podcast about the history of Hollywood. A must listen for any film fan.
  • Pop Culture
    • Mostly shows about video games and movies. I don't listen to these as much now as I once did, but sometimes I get a nostalgic urge to revisit less chaotic times. I'd likely be mentally healthier if I listened to these more :)
      • 8-4 Play - Long running podcast about Japanese video games from the English-Japanese localization team, 8-4.
      • Cheap Ass Gamer - General video game podcast where three dudes, maybe older Millenials, maybe younger Gen-Xers, discuss gaming news and what they're playing. One of a couple podcasts I've been listening to since high school.
      • CriterionCast - A podcast focusing on the Criterion Collection of curated films, both physical and streaming releases.
      • Player One Podcast - Another gaming podcast I've been listening to for over a decade. This one is hosted by former writers for game magazines that I grew up reading.
      • Radio Free Nintendo - A podcast that means more to me than most. I was an avid listerner to RFN throughout high school. I eventually joined the staff of Nintendo World Report (its parent site) and worked as a writer and editor for a few years, reviewing games and writing news. In 2012, the position sent me to E3 in LA, where I had the chance to meet Shigeru Miyamoto. I even got to record with the team of RFN.

I owe a lot to this podcast. I don't listen to every new episode, but I occasionly check back in with the crew. I'm very happy to see it's still going. It's one of the very best Nintendo podcasts.
      • Retronauts - Great classic video game podcast. They also sometimes cover other forms of media. Their Gundam episode is an excellent primer for the series.
